Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) epidemiological investigations prevent the spread of TB by identifying additional patients with TB among
contacts receiving a diagnosis of and treatment for latent TB infection (LTBI). Preventing TB is an important part of the TB
control program. For this, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) has operated the TB Epidemiological Investigations Team since 2013 and conducted 3,759 investigations, along with a household contact screening in 2017. According to this report, an investigation was conducted because a high school student with smear-positive TB (an index case) was reported to the KCDC in January 2017. After screening 460 contacts within school where the index case was attending, two cases were classified as TB patients, and 67 cases did as LTBI. Additionally, after household contact investigation, three family members of the index case tested positive for LTBI and genotyped identically with the index case. This report shows the importance of tuberculosis investigations and management of household contacts.
